    But pregnancy can make that routine feel much harder than expected.

    Digestive discomfort and heightened sensitivity to taste and smell can change what feels tolerable from one day to the next.(1,2,3) Then there are the practical challenges: large tablets, difficulty swallowing and unpleasant aftertastes.(4)

    This raises an important question: how might different pregnancy supplement formats affect a person’s daily prenatal routine?

    Let's explore some common frustrations women can experience with prenatal multivitamins, why they can happen during pregnancy, and how different formats, such as prenatal powders, may suit different preferences and routines.

    "The taste makes me feel sick."

    Pregnancy can change how you experience taste and smell.(3) Foods and drinks that were completely fine before pregnancy can suddenly become less appealing, and supplements aren't exempt.(3)

    Some women find the smell or taste of a supplement unpleasant or experience a lingering aftertaste. This can make the supplement routine feel less straightforward.

    What can you do?

    The nutritional profile of a prenatal supplement is an important consideration, and sensory factors such as taste, smell and aftertaste may also influence how a person experiences the product. Some prenatal formulations, including powders, use taste-masking technologies to help reduce the characteristic taste of certain nutrients, such as iron.

    "Why are prenatal vitamins so huge?"

    There is a genuine formulation challenge behind the size of many prenatal supplements:  pregnancy requires higher daily intakes of certain nutrients however, tablets, gummies and capsules have size limitations, and can only fit a certain amount of nutrients.

    Some nutrients, including calcium and magnesium, take up more space than other nutrients, such as b-vitamins. Fitting a broad range of micronutrients into a conventional tablet, gummy or capsule can therefore influence size, the number of doses required per day or the amount of certain nutrients included.

    For some women, the size and number of tablets can make a daily prenatal routine feel like a lot to manage. Research into supplement-related swallowing difficulties has highlighted multivitamin and calcium pills among the products commonly involved, with women accounting for the majority of reported cases in one US FDA analysis of an older population.(4) In Australia, the TGA has also proposed additional labelling requirements for larger tablets and capsules (above 22mm in length and 9mm in width), recognising that size can be an important consideration for swallowing, however a decision is yet to be finalised.(5)

    If you find large tablets/capsules or multiple daily doses difficult to manage, you may wish to explore alternative formats such as powders or oral melts.

    "Why do I need to separate my prenatal supplement doses?"

    Pregnancy is already full of things to remember.

    Adding multiple supplements at different times of the day can make an already busy routine feel more complicated. Some women may also prefer to minimise the number of times they need to swallow a tablet or manage an unpleasant taste or aftertaste.

    Some prenatal supplements recommend separating doses of certain nutrients, for reasons such as tolerance or absorption.(6) For instance, many new prenatal supplements remove iron from their formulas, to reduce the impact on nausea or allow for separate, higher doses. However, this can contribute to a complicated supplement routine where separating doses may not be necessary.(7)

    For instance, certain iron forms and doses have shown lower rates of digestive discomfort.( 8,9,10)

    Furthermore, recommendations to separate nutrients such as iron and calcium, or iron and zinc, can depend on dose, form and duration.(11,12,13,14) Some studies suggest these interactions may be more relevant at higher doses or in shorter-term study settings than in routine daily multinutrient supplementation.

    What can you do?

    The best approach can depend on the nutrient, its form and dose, as well as your individual nutritional needs.

    Where appropriate, consider a prenatal supplement that best fits your daily routine. If your healthcare professional has recommended specific supplementation, follow their advice about dose and timing.

    "What about iron? Can iron cause gut discomfort?"

    Iron is an important nutrient during pregnancy, but the form of iron used in a supplement can influence its sensory characteristics and digestive tolerability.

    Some iron supplement forms and doses have been associated with digestive discomfort and/or metallic tastes more than others, which may be an important consideration for women already experiencing digestive changes during pregnancy.(6, 9)

    What can you do?

    Consider both the amount and form of iron when choosing a suitable prenatal supplement. If your healthcare professional has recommended a specific dose or form of iron, follow their advice.

    Do prenatal powders actually work?

    Yes, a prenatal powder can provide vitamins and minerals to support a healthy pregnancy in a convenient alternative format to tablets or capsules.

    Powder formats can offer greater formulation flexibility than conventional tablets or capsules, particularly where large-sized nutrients need to be included, such as calcium or magnesium.

    Certain oral-melt powders can offer the additional benefit of dissolving directly in the mouth, without the need to mix with food or water; which can provide convenience, while also allowing for specific nutrients, such as mecobalamin, to begin their  absorption across the lining of the mouth, as well as via the digestive tract.(15) To address taste barriers, powders can be flavoured with natural fruit flavours and plant-based sweeteners, or microencapsulated, to mask unpleasant tastes of certain nutrients

    However, not all prenatal powders are created equal.

    Powder formulations can vary widely; certain powdered supplements focus on specific health benefits or individual nutrients and others may focus on convenience. It's worth checking the full nutrient panel of any prenatal, regardless of format, as they can not only differ based on what they contain, but also on what they leave out.

    The important point is that powder alone isn't what makes a prenatal effective. What matters is the combination of the nutrients, their forms, doses and how they are delivered including palatability and tolerability.

    What can you do?

    When considering a prenatal powder, look beyond the format and check what nutrients it provides, in what form and at what dose, and whether the powder addresses taste and texture. With evidence-backed ingredients and technologies such as taste masking or microencapsulation, powders can be designed to incorporate a broader range of nutrients while helping address some of the taste and texture barriers that can make supplements harder to take consistently. Consult your healthcare professional for more personalised advice.

    So, what makes a good prenatal?

    The simple answer to this question is there isn't one perfect prenatal supplement for every woman.

    Choosing a prenatal supplement can involve considering more than simply how many ingredients appear on the label, such as:

    1. Nutrient profile – the range of vitamins and minerals
    2. Nutrient doses – nutrient doses guided by evidence, such as 400mcg folic acid taken 4 weeks before pregnancy through to first trimester to help prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida and/or anencephaly
    3. Nutrient form – different nutrient forms can have different physical and formulation characteristics
    4. Bioavailability – the way in which different nutrients are absorbed
    5. Palatability – taste and smell can become unexpectedly important during pregnancy
    6. Practicality – large pills and multiple daily doses may not be necessary to meet your health needs
    7. Product format – the delivery format, whether powder or capsule, influences both formulation possibilities and how the product is experienced
    8. Consistency – a supplement routine should be practical enough to fit into everyday life
